The wheels came off Alex Salmond's energy & so called "green jobs" strategy again as A SCOTTISH renewable energy company went into receivership with the loss of 55 jobs yesterday as hundreds of wind-turbine owners were warned to shut down the company's machines amid fears that the blades could fly off.

Commenters on that story noted that even during recent gale force winds in Scotland, many windmills were seen not turning, presumably for fear that the blades might fly off. What dangerous useless expensive ugly things these really are. When are we going to stop this madness?

Although I wouldn't recommend buying any of this particular company's turbines, wind turbines / windmills in general are clean, quiet and beautiful. Using wind for energy predates electricity, so I doubt it's going to go away anytime soon, no matter how much you profess your hate for Al Gore.

"What dangerous useless expensive ugly things these really are. "

Oh sure, flammable liquids, explosive gases, and radioactive sources of energy are so much safer.

but of course, a few windmills getting shut down is far worse.

The new technology is Wind Stalks.

WIND POWER WITHOUT THE BLADES: BIG PICS
http://news.discovery.com/tech/wind-power-without-the-blades.html

I don't understand why someone would be anti renewable energy because of this. It is still a developing industry. Like it or not, we are going to have to be weaned off of fossil fuels and coal. If America doesn't jump into the competition for "green jobs" the Chinese will end up monopolizing the new technology and jobs. Since when is it "American" to give up and quit in the face of stiff competition?

    "c.r. lee" remarks were deleted, but I didn't do that.

    The account seems to have been deleted, perhaps due to errant behaviour ?

    @Z1P2

    This story points to an underlying problem, of cutting corners, and mass production of untried and untested designs, which are hastily rushed through with little oversight. This would not happen for instance in the motor industry, where a new design of vehicle must undergo rigorous testing, for years, and even testing to destruction. True, windmills have existed for centuries, but those modern versions are not commercially viable, and save no CO2 (if that was the object in building them). Actually I pity Al Gore, and do note hate him, the Avatar on my "Vine" is a Satire, or perhaps a prediction?

    ---------

    @blazera

    Of course you use an argument which is an Aristotlean fallacy of logic.

    All that you refer to about Oil, Gas, and other chemicals may be true, but this does not negate the facts and opinions about windmills, their appearance, and commercial viability and so on. You cannot expect to win a debate about windpower by referring to some disparate matter instead.

    ------------

    @mountainmike-1199289

    Yes I have seen this design, but it will be no more competent at providing electricity when the wind doesn't blow, than any other windmill. Wind speeds have been falling over the past 15-20 years worldwide. As to the so called "green jobs" argument, this is sadly a fantasy. Just search ANY search engine for the term green jobs, and add fiasco, failure, debacle and similar terms, and see what is the real picture about that. The Chinese of course already have a virtual monopoly in supplying the rare earth metals to manufacture the wind turbine magnets, and so this does however explain why so many turbine manufactures will buy their hardware from China, and why China is so keen to promote the foreign use of wind turbines, whilst at the same time consuming ever more coal, oil, and gas themselves. No amount of USA willpower or Knowhow can alter the Mineral Geology of Planet Earth.

    ------------

    @findway

    I don't think that I shall be buying one of your wedding dresses anytime soon. Even if this was a "spam" message, I hope that you took the time to actually read the article referred to in the blog.
